The Brighton Backyard Ultra features a unique last person standing format that challenges participants to run a designated loop within a strict time limit. Each hour, competitors must complete a 6.7km course starting at the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club.
The route takes runners over a bridge to the local domain, navigating rocky terrain before descending to the beach for a 2km stretch along the shoreline. From there, participants tackle a climb up to the prominent Big Rock before returning to the surf club to prepare for the next lap.
The atmosphere is often supportive and communal, with participants and spectators engaging in a shared experience of endurance and determination. As the event progresses, the camaraderie among runners and their supporters becomes a significant aspect of the race, highlighting the local community’s involvement. The race continues until only one runner remains, emphasizing both physical stamina and mental resilience.
