The Molesworth Run traverses New Zealand’s largest high country station, offering a challenging 84km off-road ultramarathon that can be tackled solo or as part of a relay team with 2 or 4 members. This event is tailored for experienced ultra-distance runners, emphasizing endurance and resilience with expected completion times around 10 hours for solo participants.
The course begins at Molesworth Cob Cottage and features a significant ascent to Ward Pass, reaching 1145 meters, before descending into Isolated Flat. This 250-hectare area features expansive grasslands and tussock, surrounded by rolling mountains and large scree slopes, presenting runners with breathtaking natural scenery. The route continues along a gravel road that parallels the Acheron River, passing historical sites like the Acheron Accommodation House and leading to the junction of the Acheron and Clarence Rivers. The final stretch follows the Clarence River to Jacks Pass, culminating in the serene North Canterbury town of Hanmer Springs, with the finish line at Chisholm Reserve on Chisholm Crescent.
The event showcases the rugged beauty and remote landscapes of the upper South Island, providing a profound sense of isolation and achievement amidst New Zealand’s dramatic high country. Community involvement is evident in the event’s organization, managed by the Marlborough Harriers, who are integral in bringing this unique running experience to life each year.
