The Waitomo Trail Run offers participants a distinctive running experience that navigates both the subterranean splendors and the striking overground landscapes of the Waitomo region. The event provides a variety of course lengths, catering to different levels of fitness and adventure-seeking spirits.
Participants in the longer distances will start at the Mangapohue natural tunnel, marking a spectacular beginning to a route that showcases unique geological formations. The courses meander through local farmlands and follow Department of Conservation tracks that run alongside the Marokopa River, offering scenic views and a close encounter with nature. The 23km race concludes at Stubbs Farm, while the 35km extends to finish at the Waitomo Glowworm Visitors Centre, allowing runners to experience the full breadth of the area’s natural beauty.
The 11km route, beginning and ending at Stubbs Farm, is notable for its passage through a karst-rich landscape, incorporating climbs over limestone rocks and sections through native bush within the QEII conservation block. This middle-distance option provides a balanced challenge with both natural obstacles and picturesque settings.
For those looking for a shorter, yet equally exhilarating experience, the 5km course starts uniquely inside the Ruakuri Caves. Emerging from the caves, participants ascend a spiral staircase into the Ruakuri Reserve, where the path takes them beneath impressive limestone formations and across bridges, featuring a mix of brief tunnels and a flat trail leading to the finish at the Waitomo Glowworm Visitors Centre.
Each course length not only challenges the runners but also immerses them in the dramatic and diverse landscapes of Waitomo, making the event a memorable encounter with New Zealand’s natural heritage. The community involvement in facilitating access to private lands and conservation areas highlights a collaborative spirit, enhancing the event’s local significance and appeal.
