The Alexander Airport Carousel Backyard Ultra features a distinct format where participants run a 6.71km loop every hour on the hour until only one runner remains. This challenging race unfolds on a mixed terrain course encircling the Alexandra Airport, incorporating both single-track and 4WD trails. Each loop includes approximately 50 meters of elevation gain, adding a level of physical challenge to the repetitive distance. The course offers runners scenic views of the nearby mountains, providing a picturesque distraction from the race’s demands.
Participants are required to be self-sufficient, bringing their own support gear such as gazebos, chairs, and sustenance. The race emphasizes endurance and strategy, with runners needing to manage their pace and recovery times effectively to stay in the competition.
The event also serves a charitable purpose, contributing a portion of each entry fee to I Am Hope and Bowel Cancer New Zealand. These organizations focus on youth mental health and bowel cancer support, respectively, adding a community-focused aspect to the event. This race not only tests physical limits but also encourages runners to contribute to meaningful causes.
