Where our images come from

We use the first of these that is available for a given event:

1. A photo the organiser sent us. Uploaded through our event submission form, where the person submitting confirms they have the right to share it and licenses us to display it.
2. The sharing image published on the event’s own website. This is the og:image a site publishes specifically so that other sites can display it when linking. We link to it on the organiser’s server — we do not copy it onto ours — and we credit the site it came from.
3. An illustration of the kind of event. A trail race gets a trail scene, a duathlon gets a duathlon scene, and so on, chosen from a small set we hold for each category. These are AI-generated images that we own. They are not photographs, and they do not show any real event, place, race or person — so there is no photographer to credit. Event pages label them as not being a photo of that event.
4. A card we generate ourselves. Used when none of the above applies.

How our bot identifies itself

When we look for an event’s sharing image, our request identifies itself as NZRunningBot/1.0 and we respect robots.txt. If your robots.txt disallows us, we do not read the page at all.

Asking us to stop using an image

If an image of yours is on the site and you would rather it was not, email [email protected] with the event page it appears on. Include the image URL if you have it.

We will stop using it. You do not need to explain why, and we will not ask you to prove ownership before acting — the event simply moves down to one of our own images. In practice this takes effect the next time the site rebuilds, which is usually within a day.

If it is your event, we would rather use your photo

A real photograph of your race is better than anything we can substitute for it. You can add one at any time through the event submission form, and it will replace whatever we are currently showing.
