The Arrowtown Backyard Ultra features a unique race format where participants run a 6.71km loop every hour until only one runner remains. This demanding format tests endurance and strategy, as each lap must be completed within one hour. Runners who fail to finish a lap in the allotted time, or are not ready at the start line for the next lap, are disqualified.
Held at Butler’s Green, the course follows the Arrow River Trail, offering a mix of hard-packed and winding single-track trails through scenic bushland. This setting not only challenges runners with its natural terrain but also enhances the experience with beautiful landscapes.
Participants can choose to compete solo or in teams of 2 to 4 members. However, each team member runs independently in the continuous lap format, with teammates providing support and encouragement as they continue in the event after any team member drops out.
As a self-supported race, participants are responsible for their own logistics, including setting up personal aid stations with necessary supplies such as food, water, and shelter. This element adds a layer of self-reliance and planning to the competition.
The event emphasizes personal endurance and community spirit, as competitors often end up supporting and cheering for each other, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere as the challenge progresses.
