The Arrowtown Backyard Ultra features a unique endurance format where participants run a loop of 6.71 km on the hour, every hour, until only one competitor remains. The event takes place at Butler’s Green, with the course primarily following the Arrow River Trail. This route combines hard-packed trail sections with winding single-track paths through the surrounding bush, offering a scenic and varied running experience.
Participants can choose to compete solo or form teams of 2 to 4, with each member running as an individual. If a team member is unable to complete a lap within the hour, they receive a DNF (Did Not Finish) designation, but the remaining members continue to run, fostering a supportive atmosphere as they cheer each other on.
As a self-supported event, runners are responsible for bringing their own supplies, such as a gazebo, chair, food, and water, which adds to the communal aspect as competitors gather and share their resources. The event encourages camaraderie among participants, creating a lively and engaging environment for both runners and spectators.
