The Best Dam Backyard Ultra challenges participants with a unique “last one standing” format, where runners must complete a 6.71 km lap each hour until only one runner remains. The event takes place in the picturesque Otematata Wetlands of Canterbury, featuring a course with minimal elevation that is well-marked and traverses scenic landscapes including views of Lake Aviemore and surrounding mountains. This same course was previously utilized during the 2024 World Team Championship, adding a layer of prestige and challenge as it is designed to test both endurance and strategy under continuous, repetitive conditions.
Each lap must be completed within one hour, and failure to do so results in disqualification. This format not only tests physical stamina but also mental resilience, as competitors must pace themselves to endure potentially numerous hours of continuous running. The race continues until only one runner is able to complete a lap.
The event emphasizes a deep connection with the natural surroundings, providing participants with an immersive experience in one of Canterbury’s notable wetland environments. This event attracts a diverse group of ultramarathon runners, from seasoned athletes seeking a rigorous challenge to those looking to push their limits in a distinctively structured race.
