The Flight of the Kōkako Trail Run offers an adventurous terrain through the Te Ranga district, presenting participants with the unique opportunity to traverse through normally inaccessible areas including native forests and private farmlands. The route is inspired by the natural habitat of the kōkako, a native bird, adding a thematic element to the experience as it weaves through creek beds and lush landscapes.
This event is distinguished by its commitment to environmental conservation. All profits are allocated towards local ecological efforts, specifically aimed at enhancing the native trapping network and planting trees to foster a natural corridor between the kōkako populations of Kaharoa and Otanewainuku. In a symbolic gesture underscoring the race’s conservation ethos, a native tree will be planted in honor of each participant, reinforcing the race’s impact beyond the running community to the broader ecological health of the region.
The community-driven aspect of the race, supported by the Paraiti Catchment Care Group, emphasizes not only physical challenge but also the collective effort in environmental stewardship, making it a meaningful engagement for participants.
