Kelly’s Canter features a challenging ascent of Puketapu Hill, rewarding participants with sweeping panoramic views from the summit. The course is known for its steep incline, which adds a unique challenge compared to typical flat races. This event fosters a family-friendly atmosphere, encouraging participation from all age groups and fitness levels.

The race honors the legacy of Albert Kelly, a local constable known for his daily runs up the hill during World War II to watch for enemy ships, adding a historic and cultural dimension to the event.
