The race
Set within the stunning Tongariro National Park, this ultra marathon offers a challenging course that showcases the dramatic landscape surrounding Mount Ruapehu. The rugged alpine terrain presents participants with diverse conditions, including high altitudes and expansive volcanic features, creating a demanding yet inspiring environment.
The event allows for solo participation or a relay format for teams of three, with relay legs varying in distance. The course for the longer option encircles Mount Ruapehu, providing a comprehensive experience of the mountain’s formidable presence.
The 60-kilometer route follows the historic Waihohonu Hut Track, concluding in Ohakune. Both distances feature a blend of striking scenery, including desert plateaus, scoria fields, native bush, and scenic ridgelines, offering breathtaking views throughout the journey. The combination of tough climbs and natural beauty enhances the overall atmosphere, attracting a range of participants who appreciate the connection to the environment.
Community involvement is evident, as the event is organized by the Ohakune Events Charitable Trust, highlighting local engagement and support for the race.
