The Leith Cross Country Relays feature a rugged grass course at the Dunedin Pony Club, presenting a challenging environment for participants. Teams, consisting of one to four runners, can opt for either an 8km or 16km distance, completed through multiple laps of the 2km course.
In addition to the relay events, there are opportunities for younger participants, with a 650m lap course designed for children under 7 years, and a 4 x 650m relay for those aged 7 to 13 years.
On the same day, the Ponydale Challenge takes place, an ultra cross country event where participants aim to complete as many 2km laps as possible within a 3-hour timeframe. This event is run concurrently with the first leg of the relays, fostering a competitive atmosphere among all racers.
Organised by the Leith Harriers and Athletic Club, the event encourages community involvement, welcoming teams from various backgrounds without the requirement to be affiliated with a running club. The overall atmosphere is one of camaraderie and local spirit, reflecting the community’s enthusiasm for outdoor activities.
