The Nelson Marathon, previously known as the Monaco Mid-Winter Marathon, features a predominantly off-road course that showcases the natural beauty of the Nelson Tasman region. Participants can expect to traverse the scenic Great Taste Trail and Moturoa Trails, with a course that largely hugs the waterfront.
The marathon route, though not held in 2026, traditionally included a loop around the picturesque Waimea Inlet, where runners would pass through lush farms and orchards before entering Moturoa / Rabbit Island. The trails here are less frequented, offering a peaceful experience as they meander through forested areas and along the beachfront of Tasman Bay, before returning along the same path.
The Half Marathon and 10km events follow an out-and-back format along the Great Taste Trail. The Half Marathon turnaround point is located at the junction of Cotterell Road, while the 10km turnaround is situated near Nelson Pine Industries, allowing participants to enjoy the same scenic views both ways.
Additionally, the Waimea 21K is a team relay event consisting of four legs, with distances ranging from 5.2km to 7.1km, encouraging community involvement and teamwork among participants. This event fosters a welcoming atmosphere, drawing both local and visiting runners to partake in the region’s natural landscapes and vibrant community spirit.
