The River-Run Backyard Ultra features a unique format where participants must complete a 6.7km loop every hour on the hour. The course offers a scenic run along the Tukituki River, utilizing both limestone and dirt trails which are predominantly flat. This setup supports continuous engagement and endurance, as runners must manage their pace and recovery strategically to stay in the competition.
The event also includes a special race for children, designed as a shorter loop that they run every 10 minutes for an hour, encouraging young runners to participate in the community event.
Community involvement is highlighted by the allocation of profits to the Waipukurau Rotary River Pathways Trust, supporting local environmental and recreational projects. This aspect not only enhances the cultural significance of the race but also fosters a spirit of community support and participation.
