What is age grading?

Age grading compares your time against the world-best time for your age and sex, expressed as a percentage. It lets a 60-year-old and a 25-year-old compare performances fairly, and lets you track your own running as you get older — even when your raw times slow down.

What's a good age-grading percentage?

As a rough guide: over 60% is a strong local-class performance, over 70% is regional class, over 80% is national class, and over 90% is world class. Most committed club runners sit somewhere in the 55–75% range.

Yes. This calculator uses the official World Masters Athletics (WMA) road factors — the very same tables parkrun uses for its age grades. Your result here should match the age grade printed on your parkrun result for the same time.

How is age grading calculated?

We divide the open-class world standard for your distance by your time multiplied by your age factor: age grade % = standard ÷ (your time × factor) × 100. The factors come from the WMA road tables for ages 5 to 100.

Why do men and women have different factors?

Men and women have different world-best standards and different rates of age-related decline, so each sex has its own set of factors. This keeps the comparison fair — your percentage reflects how close you are to the best of your own age and sex.
