The M*A*S*H Backyard Ultra takes place during the Wellington Anniversary weekend at Queen Elizabeth Park on the Kāpiti Coast. This unique event challenges participants to complete a 6.71 km loop every hour, with elimination for those who cannot finish within the time limit. The winner is determined by who completes the most laps.
The course offers a diverse experience, weaving through paddocks and along the coast, as well as traversing the historic Yankee Trail. Participants will encounter ex-farm tracks, wetlands, and remnants of kahikatea forests, with a total elevation gain of around 80 meters. The event is self-sufficient, requiring runners to bring their own supplies including shelter, food, and hydration.
Named in homage to the 1970s TV series, the event recognizes the U.S. marines who camped at this location during World War II. The M*A*S*H Backyard Ultra collaborates with the Kāpiti U.S. Marines Trust, a local non-profit organization, to promote the historical significance of the site. Proceeds from the event contribute to the restoration of exhibits that celebrate this important part of New Zealand’s history.
