The Eltham event in the Nexans Fun Run/Walk Series offers participants an immersive experience in one of New Zealand’s meticulously maintained sanctuaries, the Rotokare Scenic Reserve. This event supports the conservation efforts overseen by the Rotokare Scenic Reserve Trust, which manages the area as a pest-free sanctuary. Participants are encouraged to contribute to these conservation efforts by adhering to specific biosecurity measures to maintain the sanctuary’s integrity. These include checking vehicles and personal belongings for pests and carrying out all rubbish, as no bins are available on-site.
The course itself winds through lush native forest, offering runners and walkers close encounters with rare wildlife, including species like the tieke (saddleback) and kiwi, which are seldom seen outside protected areas. This setting not only challenges the participants with its natural terrain but also educates them on the importance of environmental preservation.
The event follows a cup-free policy, urging all attendees to bring their own water bottles to minimize environmental impact. Dogs are not permitted within the reserve to protect the sensitive habitats of the local wildlife.
This race is part of a broader series that emphasizes community involvement and environmental awareness, making it a distinctive feature in the local running calendar. Participants of all levels are welcome to join in one of the several distances offered, catering to a wide range of fitness and experience levels.
