The North West Rogaine Series takes place annually in winter, beginning with an event at Riverhead Forest. This particular event is a 90-minute foot rogaine, designed to accommodate participants of varying skill levels, from novices to seasoned rogainers.
During the event, participants navigate through the forest using a map and compass, with the flexibility to choose the order in which they visit checkpoints. Each checkpoint carries a different point value, and the objective is to accumulate the highest score within the allotted time.
The course is marked with orange and white orienteering signs, providing guidance from the junction of Old North Road and Ararimu Valley Road. The atmosphere is typically engaging, fostering community involvement and a spirit of friendly competition. The natural terrain of Riverhead Forest adds to the experience, offering a scenic backdrop for participants as they explore the area.
