The race
The Reservoir Dog Backyard Ultra is an endurance event characterized by its last runner standing format. Participants complete a 6.706km lap every hour on the hour until only one runner remains, with all others marked as did not finish (DNF).
The course meanders around the Marton Reservoir, utilizing a combination of walking and mountain bike tracks that feature minimal elevation changes. A unique aspect of this event is the Race Director’s coin toss before each lap, determining the direction of the course—clockwise for heads and anti-clockwise for tails.
Competitors have the option to participate solo or in two-person teams, with flexibility in lap assignments, as either member can run any lap in any order. The event fosters community engagement, as it is organized by the Tūtaenui Stream Restoration Society, adding a local touch to the atmosphere.
For specific rules and further details, participants are encouraged to consult the event website.
