The Meridian Twizel Hard Labour weekend offers a multisport challenge set in the picturesque surroundings of Twizel. This event, originating from a simple half marathon fundraiser in 1985, has evolved into a robust two-day competition that includes kayaking, mountain biking, and trail running.
Participants can choose to enter any of the individual events or take on the challenge of completing all three, earning the title of a “Hard Labourer.” This includes a 20 km kayak through the serene waters of the canals, a choice between a 16 km or 40 km mountain bike ride through rugged trails, and a trail run or walk which offers both 10 km and 21 km options through scenic routes.
For younger athletes, the event is equally engaging with the mini Dusky mountain bike at 10 km and the mini Pyramid run or walk at 5 km. These races provide an excellent opportunity for children to experience the excitement of outdoor sports in a safe and encouraging environment.
Introduced in 2024, the Youth Hard Labourer Event caters specifically to participants aged 12 to 17 years. This new addition allows younger competitors to undertake a modified version of the adult challenge, with a shorter 4-5 km kayak segment on Lake Ruataniwha, a 16 km mountain bike course, and a 10 km off-road run.
This event not only challenges athletes but also brings the community together, celebrating outdoor sports and the natural beauty of the Twizel area. The atmosphere is festive and welcoming, making it a memorable weekend for competitors and spectators alike.
