The Wairarapa Backyard Ultra is a unique endurance race characterized by its last one standing format. Set during Easter weekend in Masterton, this event invites runners to tackle a 6.71km loop every hour, completing each lap in under an hour. Participants have the remaining time within the hour to recover and prepare for the next lap. The competition concludes when only one runner surpasses the others by completing an additional lap.
The course, starting and finishing at the Colin Pugh Sportsbowl, offers a mix of scenic Wairarapa landscapes, featuring a combination of trails, gravel roads, and short stretches of pavement. This variety adds to the challenge while providing an engaging running experience.
Capped at 150 participants, the event fosters a sense of community and camaraderie among competitors, who support each other in this endurance test. The atmosphere is one of determination and resilience, reflecting the spirit of ultramarathon running.
